As Training Director with V.Ships, Martin has the responsibility for the professional education of some 23,000 seafarers and overseeing the management of 14 training centres.
He began his career with Shell Tankers in 1979 as cadet and as 3rd Officer until 1983 when he joined the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service engaging in both deep-sea and harbour towage for the Royal Navy.
In 1990 he joined Maersk where he stayed for 10 year and in the various roles of Master, Cadet Training Officer and Fleet Safety Instructor.
He is a member of the Nautical Institutes Education & Training Committee, Vice Chairman of the West of Scotland Branch of the N.I., has assisted SIGTTO with LNG competence for deck officers, assists the MCA with their Human Element working group, and more recently, Intertanko with TOTS.
He holds a diploma in Safety Inspection from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) . He has written articles for The Baltic, Safety at Sea and Seaways magazines, and delivered papers and been Chairman at previous manning and training conferences and at SASMEX.
Martin works at the V.Ships UK office in Glasgow and enjoys cricket, snowboarding, classic cars, motor-cycling, and his dogs.
